WHO says over 1 billion people worldwide are at risk of falling into poverty due to out-of-pocket health spending of 10% or more of their household budget. According to the Nigerian Demographic Health Survey 2018, less than 5% of the Nigerian population have health insurance impeding the access of over 200 million Nigerians to needed healthcare services. This means the average low-income Nigerian has 2 options when they are sick; either borrow further pushing them into poverty or self-medicate increasing the risk of morbidity and mortality.
Whilst serving as a Physician's Assistant in rural Nigeria, our founder saw first hand the struggles of the average Nigerian to access basic healthcare. Sick persons would rather visit traditional healers or manage their illnesses at home rather than visit the hospital, simply because they couldn't afford to pay for their medical bills.
She saw tons of preventable death and morbidities, only if they had come to the hospital earlier. The pregnant women who bled to death because she insisted to keep on 'pushing' at the traditional birth attendants house instead of coming to the hospital, numerous cases of stroke from undiagnosed hypertension, amputations from undiagnosed diabetes, we could go on and on! The common denominator here was their inability to afford healthcare caused by poverty.
In 2021, we started the HealthRelief Project, a community project where we provided financial and psychological support to 100+ chronically sick Nigerians who couldn't afford medical bills. We also created Art & Music Festival in 2022 to lighten up hospital wards with art therapy and music as well as fun activities to improve the psychological health of patients with chronic illnesses and their family members/caregivers. Despite these interventions the problem still exists; many Nigerians were still rejected care because they couldn't afford medical payment and this adds to an increasing morbidity and mortality rate that are preventable. We went back to the drawing board and conducted more public health and market research. Our research birth Health4Moni, an affordable health insurance plan for average Nigerians (informal sector, artisans, low-income) using the daily contributions model (ajo/esusu) which gives them access to quality healthcare a savings net, financial literacy, investment opportunities and sometimes loans to enable them live rich, healthy lives.
We envision a Nigeria that delivers quality and affordable healthcare where everyone has access to quality and affordable healthcare without fear of financial risk or burden and where they live above poverty and grow wealth.
Our mission is to reduce the number of preventable deaths in Nigeria by ensuring everyone, especially the informal sector has access to quality healthcare without fear of financial risk or burden by providing affordable health insurance whilst also eradicating poverty via our savings, investment and financial literacy platform.
